Halloween σήμερα… και λοιπές αμερικανιές

Γιορτινή μέρα σήμερα, μάγισσες, φαντάσματα, κατσαρίδες, στοιχειωμένα σπίτια, trick-or-treating, τρομαχτικές κολοκύθες, θρίλερ υπό το φως των κεριών… Τι, μα δε μιλάω για τις εκλογές στο ΠΑΣΟΚ!!! Δεν καταλάβατε τίποτα; Ε, μα που ζείτε, it’s Halloween…

To Halloween, που λέτε, γιορτάζεται τη νύχτα της 31ης Οκτωβρίου. Οι ρίζες του βρίσκονται στην παγανιστική γιορτή Samhain, που γιορτάζονταν από τους Κέλτες στην Ιρλανδία και στην Αγγλία. Μέσω των μεταναστών η γιορτή έφτασε στην Αμερική και σήμερα γιορτάζεται σε δίαφορες χώρες όπως η Ιρλανδία, η Αγγλία, οι ΗΠΑ, ο Καναδάς, το Πουέρτο Ρίκο και η Αυστραλία.

Η λέξη Halloween προέρχεται από το All-hallow-even, δηλαδή την παραμονή του “All Hallows’ Day” (εναλλάκτικά, All Saints’ Day ή γιορτή όλων των αγίων, που είναι η 1η Νοεμβρίου).

Σύμφωνα με την Κέλτικη παράδοση, το Halloween γιορτάζεται σε μια από τις «liminal» περιόδους του χρόνου (δεν ξέρω πως να το μεταφράσω), όπου τα πνέυματα έρχονται σε επαφή με τον φυσικό κόσμο και η μαγεία είναι έντονη στην ατμόσφαιρα…

Δύο πράγματα μου προκαλούν ενδιαφέρον στο Halloween: (1) αυτή η εξοικείωση των παιδιών με το κακό, με τον τρόμο που γίνεται παιχνίδι, και (2) ο συνδυασμός διάφορων εθίμων και μύθων, μερικά από τα οποία έχουμε και εμείς (μασκαρέματα, κάλαντα κτλ), αλλά με τελείως διαφοπρετικό concept. Εξηγούμαι λοιπόν (στα αγγλικά, ας είναι καλά η Wiki, και για να σας βάλω στο mood…)

Κολοκύθες

Κολοκύθες παντού, πάρτε μαχαίρι και αρχίζουμε.

The carved pumpkin, lit by a candle inside, is one of Halloween’s most prominent symbols. This is a Scottish and Irish tradition of carving a lantern which goes back centuries. Many families that celebrate Halloween carve a pumpkin into a frightening or comical face and place it on their home’s doorstep after dark.

Trick-or-treating

Το αγαπημένο μου, τα δικά μας κάλαντα σε αμερικανική version (και μάλιστα χωρίς χρήματα)…

Trick-or-treating, is an activity for children on or around Halloween in which they proceed from house to house in costumes, asking for treats such as candy with the question, “Trick or treat?” The “trick” part of “trick or treat” is a threat to play a trick on the homeowner or his property if no treat is given.

Χρώματα

Μάυρο και πορτοκαλί κυριαρχούν.

Black and orange are the traditional colors of Halloween. Black is the symbol for death, night, witches, black cats, bats and vampires. Orange is the symbol for pumpkins, Autumn, the turning leaves and fire.

Μεταμφιέσεις

Απόκριες δηλαδή, απλά με θεματολογία τρόμου.

Halloween costumes are traditionally those of monsters such as vampires, ghosts, skeletons, witches, and devils. Costumes are also based on themes other than traditional horror, such as those of characters from television shows, movies and other pop culture icons.

Θρίλερ

Τρομακτικά ή αστεία;

The imagery surrounding Halloween is largely an amalgamation of the Halloween season itself, nearly a century of work from American filmmakers and graphic artists, and a rather commercialized take on the dark and mysterious. Common Halloween characters include ghosts, ghouls, witches, vampires, bats, owls, crows, vultures, haunted houses, pumpkinmen, black cats, aliens, spiders, goblins, zombies, mummies, skeletons, and demons. Particularly in America, symbolism is inspired by classic horror films, which contain fictional figures like Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, and The Mummy.

Ο καθρέφτης

Καθρέφτη, καθρεφτάκι μου, ποιος είναι ο καλός μου; Ή θα μείνω γεροντοκόρη;

In North America, unmarried women were frequently told that if they sat in a darkened room and gazed into a mirror on Halloween night, the face of their future husband would appear in the mirror. However, if they were destined to die before marriage, a skull would appear.

Φαγητά

Καλά, εδώ να δεις «παραδοσιακή κουζίνα»…

Because the holiday comes in the wake of the annual apple harvest, candy apples (also known as toffee, taffy or caramel apples) are a common Halloween treat made by rolling whole apples in a sticky sugar syrup, and sometimes rolling them in nuts. Other foods associated with the holiday: candy corn, colcannon, bonfire toffee, apple cider, popcorn (!!!), roasted pumpkin seeds, pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, wrapped pieces of small candy (καραμέλες), in orange and black, small bags of chips, pretzels and cheese corn, chocolates, caramels, and gum!!!

Αυτό είναι το Halloween λοιπόν, κάτι μεταξύ αποκριών, Χριστουγέννων, Frankenstein, τρόμου, γέλιου, φθινοπωρινής μαγείας και κολοκύθων. Μια light γιoρτή στα μέτρα της αμερικάνικης κουλτούρας, με πολλές εμπορικές προεκτάσεις, όπως όλες οι γιορτές, και βαθιές ρίζες στην Κέλτικη παράδοση.

M’ αρέσουν ρε παιδιά οι παραδόσεις, ακόμα κι αν είναι τόσο light όσο το Halloween! Και που είστε ακόμα, κρατηθείτε, έρχεται και το Thanksgiving, θα επανέλθω…
